Knowing I won't break but I'm scared of the dark and I never new the light until my heart gave a fuck. So I'm afraid of the light cause it never felt right, but I'm finally sleeping at night and I've been counting scars.
Suicide is something many people don't like discussing but must be discussed. The act of taking ones life is seen differently by many people. For some its weakness, "well, I've been through worse they should be able to do it too." I've heard this statement too many times and although it may be true that you have been through worse and made it. That really doesn't matter at all. It's not you or your life we are discussing here. Everyone deals with trauma their own way and what is traumatic to some may not be to others. In the end it's not up to us to determine if they should be contemplating suicide. It is up to us to understand what trauma is making them want to end their life and work together to help them overcome this trauma and prevent them from killing themselves.
For most people discussing suicide with someone their concerned about is a daunting idea. It can be difficult to understand why they feel this way & how you can make a difference in their lives. However, simply starting a conversation with someone who has suicidal thoughts could be just the thing they need to prevent them from going over the edge. The following are a few ways to help you shape your discussion:
-
Always allow the person the space to talk.
-
Listen to the person’s struggles and feelings & let them know that you care about them.
-
Someone thinking about taking their life is usually feeling overwhelming mental anguish & pain (this can be emotional, psychological or social). Allowing them the space & opportunity to discuss their thoughts & feelings can help a person thinking of suicide to feel supported. This is an opportunity to assist them in viewing other perspectives.
